Weather in Bowling Green

The Mayor’s Weekly Article

What an enjoyable week with a good mix of heat and thunderstorms. My heart goes out to the residents and the City of Elsberry. Once again, however, tragedy brings people together for a common cause- “to help other people.” How you treat people today is the way you will be remembered tomorrow. The Bible says, “The upright citizens bless a city and make it prosper, but the talk of the gossiper, (wicked), tears it apart.” Look at the good in people and you will find favor! If you think the worst of people, depression will find you.  Bowling Green is not perfect, but we are filled with great people that care for other people. Bowling Green is also prospering in many ways: financially, health and wellness wise, socially, and with great opportunities! There is a concern for those on fixed incomes, but we hope the “no tax on social security” will allow for added income. Unfortunately, prices for medicines have increased but again, ”hopefully” bringing pharmaceutical companies back to America will lower the cost of meds. Please keep your faith and trust in America and be proud to be an American. In my travels, it’s still the greatest place in the world to live and dream.

U.S. Department of Transportation sent a letter to A Better Project 54 Coalition on July 15, 2025. It stated, “Congratulations! The US Route 54 Shared Four Lane Project was selected to receive a FY 2025 BUILD grant in the amount of $24,892,433. I was privileged to be a part of this for the last 5 ½ years but so many have been working on this project for at least the past 20 years I’m told. Many thanks to our County Commissioners past and present, Audrain County and their leadership and commitment, Mark Twin Regional Council of Governments, as well as MODOT and their reps over the years. Sam Graves was very instrumental in obtaining this along with his staff and our own Representative Chad Perkins and Senator Travis Fitzwater along with President Trump and Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy. This will help to increase business and potential manufacturing to Bowling Green and NE Missouri.

As Highway 54 is developing to Curryville, now is the time to prepare for these four lane changeable lanes and anticipate the completion to the Champ Clark bridge. This is a time to target strategic real estate sites and re-development areas. How do we do this without losing valuable farmland? Our goals should be to refurbish or construct new buildings around the north part of town and expand off our city square in preparation for new customers and consumers coming off Hwy 54. Businesses that will attract travelers to visit, eat, refuel, shop, and possibly stay overnight to see our historical sites, Amish Country, our lakes and parks, and enjoy small town rural America life!
